Boyce and Jefford Relay Festival a success

The inaugural Boyce and Jefford Relay Festival and fun day, held at the Police Ground, saw Guyana’s top athletes compete for cash prizes. The event sought to give the sports fans a taste of what is to come – that is, the grand Boyce and Jefford athletics meet slated for Linden later this year.
During the athletics portion of the day, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Sports Club dominated their fellow national club opponents,

mainly Police and Super Upcoming Runners (SUR) which seemed competitive, but most times were relegated to either second or third place. The mighty GDF came in first in the distance medley race (males), 4x200m (males) and the 4x100m. Coming in a close second was the Police Sports Club, which also won the sprint medley (males) which comprised the 400, 200 and 100 meters. Coming in third were Super Upcoming Runners, a team fans called the underdogs, but their name will be remembered, as on that day they marked their spot in the top three numerous times.
Apart from the main attraction – athletics, sport fans, along with their families, were treated to sports clubs battling on the football and cricket field.
On the cricket side of things, which saw Boyce/Jefford XI vs Trophy Stall, with Boyce/Jefford setting a meagre target of 60 from their 10 overs for their opponents to chase. During the Boyce/Jefford’s innings, wickets tumbled with Christopher Barnwell, a national and former West Indies player, falling for a duck as he tried to send the ball over the boundary and exposed his stumps. However, the 26 runs posted by Lennox Cush, a former national player, gave the side some hope of reaching a fightable total. But, in the end, Trophy Stall had the best of them. Chasing 61 from 10 overs was a ‘walk in the park’, as Trophy Stall quickly made it with 3.3 overs to spare and eight wickets in hand. S Budoo topscored with 35*.
