Boys’ Pee Wee tournament set to kick off tomorrow

Hundreds of young football hopefuls will tomorrow begin their quest to lift the coveted Courts Pee Wee Under 11 championship title as the 2019 edition of this tournament commences.

A glimpse of last year’s action

This grassroots’ level tournament, now in its eighth year, affords opportunity to primary school players to begin or develop their skills. With stakeholders such as Courts Guyana, and Banks DIH under their Rainforest Waters and Malta Supreme brands, over 4 million has been invested in the tournament, which is expected to run for about 7 weeks.
Twenty-four teams will be participating, namely: Ann’s Grove, Beterverwagting, Craig, Enterprise, FE Pollard, Genesis, JE Burnham, Marian Academy, Mocha, Mae’s, North Georgetown, Redeemer, St Agnes, St Ambrose, St Margaret, St Pius, St Stephen’s, Smith Memorial, Soesdyke, South Ruimveldt, Timehri, Tucville, Uitvlugt and West Ruimveldt Primary schools.
When the action begins tomorrow, the teams will begin their round robin stage, hoping to finish on top of their group. The knockout stages will begin soon after with round-of-sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the much anticipated final. 2018 Champions St. Pius Primary will be looking to successfully defend their title.
While the tournament will bring out a high level of competitiveness from the youngsters, they will have something more to play for, as the GFF Youth Development Officer has explained that the games will be scouted closely for an upcoming Under-13 tournament,”
“We’re going to send representatives there to scout the games, have a look at the players that we can bring forward,” Joseph has explained. “For the very first time, we’re going to have the National Under-13 group that is going to start preparing from January next year; so I’m quite sure that from within these players that are going to participate we’re going to find a few that will be eligible for that,” the Youth Development Officer went on to say.
The ‘Pee Wee’ Under-11 action is expected to commence at 13:00hrs on Saturday afternoon. The times were pushed back to accommodate students who attend the Ministry of Education’s Math Camp on Saturday mornings.
