A 30-year-old labourer of Charity Riverdam, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) has been remanded to prison after being charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Munesh Samaroo was arrested last Monday in front of Xenon Night Club in Charity, Essequibo Coast by Police ranks who were on mobile patrol in the area.

At about 21:45h the ranks observed Samaroo standing and acting in a suspicious manner and a search was conducted on his person, during which a transparent plastic bag containing cocaine was reportedly found. The substance amounted to nine grams. He was subsequently charged under Section 5 (1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10. Samaroo appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on last Thursday and he initially pleaded guilty with explanation. Based on the explanation provided, the Magistrate entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Bail was objected to by the prosecutor, and Samaroo was remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to March 16.
