West Indies Test Captain Roston Chase described his first ever series win at the helm as his greatest achievement as a West Indian player.
The Barbadian all-rounder was under the heat prior to the series, but he recorded a career-best 194 and led the West Indies to a 1-0 series win against Sri Lanka.
“It means a lot. I think this is by far my greatest achievement as a West Indies player. And having not won against Sri Lanka in 23 years, I think that was the driving force for this team to come out here and perform this brilliantly that we did,” Chase said about the achievement.

“And that’s the beauty about sports. You can fail for as long as possible and then just one day everything clicks, and you find back where you have been before. So, it’s just a magnificent feeling to come and stand up for the team as a Captain and not only try to inspire and motivate you guys, but to go out there and actually do the hard yards for the team. And I think that inspires the team as well and helps everyone to play and believe in each other.”
The Test Captain is elated with the continued progress shown by his side, with batsmen scoring centuries and the openers laying the foundation.
“Yeah, I’m very pleased about how the team is going because usually it’s the bowlers that really do the hard work for the team. But I think that in this series the batsmen really stood out, Chase opined, “We had four centuries and some big centuries too, not just centuries one-on-one and stuff like that, but some very big centuries. And that’s what I’ve been asking the guys to do. I think that if we’re going to compete as a test-playing nation, we need to be able to score runs and score runs consistently. And we are capable with the ball.
“So, once we find our footing with the bat, the ball will come along as well. And I think that’s what will make us into a top-playing test nation.”
Chase also reflected on the veteran’s milestone, Kemar Roach, who claimed his 300th Test wicket in the opening Test.
“Roach’s 300th wicket – that was special, just to see the guys elated and just jumping on his back. And he’s just there in all his glory. I think that was my favourite part of this series.”
“Playing for West Indies is always an honour and not just a privilege. So, it’s great to just play for West Indies, whether I’m the Captain or just another player. It’s always great. So, we are just looking forward to going into this next series now,” the Test skipper added.
