Guyana’s Cleveland Thomas has been selected to compete in the 2027 AUA Rohrman 25K Trail in Antigua and Barbuda on April 10.
Thomas told Guyana Times Sport that the organiser extended the invitation after monitoring the performances of Guyanese distance runners over the past few years. The arrangement was facilitated through the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
“The organiser selected me after following the performances of Guyana’s long-distance athletes for the last couple of years,” Thomas said.
The reigning two-time Guyana National 10K champion plans to begin preparing in September, giving him approximately six months to adjust to the demands of trail racing.
“I will start my preparation around September so that I will have a good six months to get the right amount of work done,” he explained. “Because it is a trail race, I will have to train on the highway and trails to get the right type of preparation.”
Thomas has recorded personal bests of 15 minutes, nine seconds in the 5K and 32 minutes, 30 seconds over 10K. He also secured podium finishes in the 10K road race at the 2025 and 2026 CARICOM Road Race.
The Guyanese runner will face a different challenge in Antigua, with the 25K course featuring rugged hills, technical trails, coastal sections and demanding climbs.
Thomas’ participation is being supported by InterCaribbean Airways as part of the event organiser’s effort to attract leading athletes from across the region.
The race will form part of the 2027 AUA Rohrman Trail and Swim Fest and Triathlon, scheduled for April 10-11 in Antigua and Barbuda.
