…as more than 4,300 vessels transit river crossing since opening
The Public Works Ministry has announced that the installation of the collision protection system at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge was completed by the CRCCI-CRCCCL-CRBG Joint Venture.
According to the ministry, the collision protection system has been installed around the main tower pile caps within the Demerara River. The system is designed to safeguard the bridge’s critical substructure from accidental vessel impacts by absorbing and reducing collision forces before they reach the main tower pile caps and other supporting components.

The ministry said the completed installation, which was done last week, is part of the bridge’s permanent safety and protection infrastructure. It is intended to enhance the resilience of the crossing, support safer navigation near the bridge’s main span, and contribute to the long-term operation of the country’s newest river crossing.
It noted that the Demerara River remains an active navigation corridor, with 4,323 vessels having passed safely beneath the bridge since it opened to traffic.
The ministry stated that the collision protection system plays a key role in protecting the bridge while facilitating the safe and orderly movement of marine traffic along the river.
The Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge was officially commissioned and opened to commuters on October 5, 2025.
