The President of the Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber, Manniram Prashad, has expressed strong concern and condemned the display of a map at the Suriname Energy, Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) 2026 that depicted the New River Triangle as part of Suriname.

The New River Triangle, a territory located within the sovereign borders of Guyana, was shown in the presentation materials as belonging to Suriname, a representation GOGEC has described as inaccurate and misleading.
GOGEC stated that international conferences, investment forums, and industry gatherings are expected to maintain accuracy and respect for internationally recognized borders and sovereign territories. The Chamber emphasized that the New River Triangle remains an integral part of Guyana’s territory, as established through internationally recognized legal and historical processes.
The organisation noted that this is not the first instance in which territorial inaccuracies have appeared in public or professional forums. It referenced previous concerns raised regarding similar depictions and reiterated its position that Guyana’s territorial integrity must be respected consistently.
While acknowledging the importance of growing cooperation between Guyana and Suriname, particularly as both countries expand their roles in the global energy sector, GOGEC stressed that such engagement must be grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty and accurate representation of territorial boundaries.
The Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to supporting constructive bilateral relations between the two countries, highlighting opportunities for collaboration in energy, trade, investment, education, and private sector development.
GOGEC further stated that it stands with the Government and people of Guyana in safeguarding national interests and territorial integrity. It has urged organisers and participants of international events to ensure that all materials and presentations accurately reflect recognised borders.
The Chamber said it will continue to advocate for the protection of Guyana’s interests while promoting regional partnerships aimed at sustainable development within the energy sector.
