A Colombian national was on Tuesday sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to trafficking more than 55 kilograms (kg) of cocaine, while his co-accused was denied bail after pleading not guilty.
Revelino Achicue Ascue and Gerardo Martinez appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Courts, charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The charge alleged that on July 24 at Farm, East Bank Demerara, the two men had 55.296 kg of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The cocaine was allegedly found in motor vehicle PAF 9376.
When the matter came up on Tuesday, Ascue, who is from Colombia, pleaded guilty.
Attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva, who appeared in the matter, made a plea in mitigation on Ascue’s behalf before he was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
Martinez, whose address was given as Sheriff Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty.
An application for bail was made on his behalf but was refused, and he was remanded to prison.
The matter involving Martinez was adjourned until August 11.
