Home News Construction worker drowns at Hope Canal
An allegedly drunken construction worker met his demise on Monday after he reportedly jumped into the Hope Canal, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and never resurfaced.
The dead man has been identified as 29-year-old Shaheed Ali of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Based on reports received, the now dead man was at his mother’s residence, consuming alcohol with two other relatives when it was decided that they should go swimming.
At about 15:00h, they made their way to the Hope Canal and plunged into the water.
After a few minutes had elapsed and Ali did not resurface, checks were made for him, but he was not found. Ali’s body has not yet been recovered.
The two relatives who had gone swimming with him have been taken into custody as Police continue their investigations.
