Twenty-one-year-old Shem Winter of Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) was on Monday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined $10,000 for trafficking in narcotics after appearing before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court and pleading guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Reportedly arrested on Saturday, Winter was charged under Section 5 (1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10.
Meanwhile, Lester George, called ‘Monkey’, a 29-year-old labourer of Achawib Village, South Rupununi, who also was charged with narcotics’ possession, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him and was fined $5,000 along with three months of community service.
The Police have said that on November 27, 2021, ranks on patrol duty, acting on information received, intercepted green Premio motorcar PRR 4548, in which were three occupants, including George and Winter.
They conducted a search on the occupants’ persons, and the search done on George unearthed two Ziplock bags with ganja concealed in his pocket. When told of the offence and cautioned, George replied, “Yes sir, is me own”.
The search done on Winter unearthed a bulky transparent plastic bag with ganja in his pants pocket. He, too, when cautioned, replied, “Yes officer, is me own”.
George and Winter were both arrested. The suspected narcotics found on Lester George amounted to five grams, while that found on Shem Winter amounted to 16 grams.
