
A 30-year-old construction worker from St Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) has been fined a total of $110,000 after pleading guilty to several traffic offences committed on the St Ignatius Public Road.
Roylee Williams appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he admitted to the offences.
The charges stemmed from an incident on Friday last while Williams was driving a motorcycle bearing trade plate number JCA 3.
Williams pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, contrary to Section 23(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. For that offence, he was fined $25,000 or, in default, sentenced to two weeks’ imprisonment.
He also pleaded guilty to operating an uninsured motor vehicle, contrary to Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party Risk) Act, Chapter 51:03. He was fined a further $25,000 or two weeks’ imprisonment in default of payment.
Additionally, Williams admitted to driving a motor vehicle while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed legal limit, contrary to Section 39(2) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. He was fined $60,000 – or six weeks’ imprisonment in default.
In total, Williams was ordered to pay $110,000 in fines. Failure to pay the fines could result in a combined default sentence of nine weeks’ imprisonment.
