Cop injured in head-on Enmore collision succumbs

…“drinking and driving destroy lives” – grieving brother warn drivers

A 33-year-old Police Sergeant, who was injured in a fatal accident along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) corridor over the weekend has succumbed, days after the crash initially claimed the life of another motorist.
Dead is Darrel Wilson of Helena Number Two Village, Mahaica, ECD, who died at about 11:38h on Monday while undergoing medical treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The accident that occurred at Enmore

His brother, Al Wilson, who spoke with Guyana Times, confirmed that the policeman’s death was the result of a pulmonary embolism, after a blood clot formed in his injured leg and travelled to his lungs during surgery.
Darrel had been admitted to the Enmore Regional Hospital immediately after the accident but was later transferred to GPHC due to the severity of his injuries. He had sustained a broken leg in two places along with multiple lacerations about his body.
According to his brother, the now-deceased had served in the Guyana Police Force for approximately 13 years, having joined on March 11, 2013. He was recently promoted and had spent several years stationed in Region Seven (Cuyuni–Mazaruni), particularly in Bartica. At the time of the accident, he was reportedly traveling to return to the mining town.
Family members noted that Darrel had been home in Mahaica on Saturday, just hours before the fatal crash, where he spent time with relatives, including assisting with washing vehicles alongside his sister and nephew.
Described as a friendly, quiet, and outgoing individual, Darrel was also focused on building a future beyond policing. He was in his second year pursuing studies in Logistics and had plans to establish his own business upon completion. Additionally, he had recently purchased land with the intention of starting a fruit farm.
“It is not easy, as persons in my family usually live over 70. We are still processing this,” his brother expressed, noting that the family has been maintaining a low profile, which is why his identity was not immediately made public.

Drinking and driving destroy lives
Now grieving, his brother during a Facebook post, made an appeal to the public.
“One bad decision cost us, Darrel. Drinking and driving destroy lives. Please think before you get behind the wheel,” his brother urged.
They are also calling on motorists to exercise greater caution and responsibility on the nation’s roadways.
“Let this be a lesson. Be patient. Be safe”, the post read.
The accident, which led to his death, occurred at about 05:45h on Sunday at Enmore, ECD, and involved motor car PAB 1013, driven by 27-year-old Keshon Arthur of Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, and motor car PAM 3828, driven by Wilson.
Arthur, who was reportedly on his way home from a social event in Georgetown, is alleged to have overtaken several vehicles before colliding head-on with Wilson’s vehicle, which was traveling in the opposite direction. Police said Darrel attempted to avoid the collision by swerving further to the southern side of the road, but the front right side of his vehicle collided with Arthur’s.
Both men were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where Arthur was pronounced dead on arrival. Wilson was treated and admitted in a stable condition before his subsequent transfer to GPHC.
Further reports indicate that Arthur had attended the “Me You and R&B” concert at the National Park in Georgetown. He reportedly left the event in the early hours of Sunday, dropped off friends along the East Bank Demerara (EBD) corridor around 04:00h, and was heading home to Mahaica when the accident occurred.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision are ongoing.
