Couchman takes narrow lead into final round of junior chess championship

Defending champion Kyle Couchman will enter the final round of the National Junior Chess Championship with a half-point lead after recording two victories at Olympic House, Liliendaal, on Friday.
Couchman defeated Alexander Zhang in round seven before overcoming Woman Candidate Master Aditi Joshi in the eighth round to maintain a perfect record of eight points from as many matches.
Candidate Master Sachin Pitamber remains in contention for the title on 7.5 points. He defeated Jeremy Cole in Friday’s opening round but surrendered his first half-point of the tournament after drawing with Alexander in the afternoon session.

Couchman and Pitamber will meet in the ninth and final round on Saturday at the same venue. Couchman needs only a draw to retain the championship, while Pitamber must win the encounter to claim the title.
Joshi holds third place with 5.5 points after splitting her two matches on Friday. She defeated Kataleya Sam in round seven before losing to Couchman later in the day.
Alexander is fourth on 4.5 points following his loss to Couchman and draw with Pitamber. Nicholas Zhang occupies fifth place with 3.5 points after defeating Aiden Tinnie and drawing with Matthew Singh.
Singh is sixth with three points. He defeated Javier Davenand in the seventh round before sharing the point with Nicholas.
Cole and Sam are level on 2.5 points, with Cole ahead on tiebreak. Tinnie and Davenand are also tied on 1.5 points, with Tinnie holding ninth position.
The other final-round matches will see Tinnie face Joshi, Alexander meet Davenand, Singh play Sam and Cole come up against Nicholas.
