Dartmouth protests: Police clear blocked roadway of debris
Following protests due to the dissatisfaction of family members and residents of Dartmouth village regarding the charge laid against the Police rank who shot Orin Boston, the Police have managed to clear the blocked roadway.
Relatives and residents of Dartmouth village, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), on Tuesday blocked a section of the Essequibo Coast main road by burning tyres and other debris in protest of the manslaughter charge laid against a member of the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Unit.
SWAT member Sherwin Peters was on Friday last charged for manslaughter and released on $1 million bail. However, the protesters were calling for him to be charged for murder and as such blocked the access bridge, interrupting the free flow of traffic.
The area including the Dartmouth bridge was cleared of debris in the wee hours of Wednesday morning by Police along with assistance of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Fire Service.
Meanwhile, Boston’s father expressed grave disappointment with the manslaughter charge that was laid Friday last on Constable Peters, who shot and killed the businessman during an anti-crime operation.
Boston was shot by the 32-year-old Police Constable on September 15, 2021, during an anti-crime operation. At the time of the shooting, Police ranks were conducting an anti-crime operation in Division Two (Essequibo Coast) and entered Boston’s house to conduct a search for prohibited and illegal items. However, during the search, there was a confrontation between Boston and the rank, resulting in him being shot to his upper left arm.
