Driver of suspected drug-laden car turns out to be a cop

CANU high-speed chase

…turns self in at CID

A police constable, who was driving the motorcar that smashed through the gate at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, after being pursued by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) is now under close arrest at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), Eve Leary.
Less than 24 hours after the high-speed chase took place along the East Bank Demerara (EBD) roadway with the police officer and his accomplices making good their escape, the cop turned himself in at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Sunday afternoon.
Guyana Times was told that the constable is attached to a police station in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
According to a senior police source, when the damaged car was unearthed at the residence of a “bodywork repairman”, the man was at church but a relative informed the police that it was a cop would took the car there for repairs.
“Investigators had no choice but to go to the church to find him…he came out and give the police an explanation. He didn’t know where the car came from, how it damaged, all he doing is working,” the police source stated. According to the rank close to the investigation, the policeman did not pay for the repairs but had notified the mechanic that he was travelling to Region Two and would return for the vehicle soon. He promised to pay for the repairs then.
This newspaper was told that “certain” persons who were aware of the situation contacted police ranks to raise their concerns about the car repair transaction. The source stated that a photograph of the cop was sent to ranks at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), and they were advised to be on the lookout for the constable, who was heading to the Essequibo Coast.
However, before the investigators could locate the constable and arrest him, the rank allegedly received a “tip-off” and turned himself in to the CID headquarters, the source said.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Commander of D Division (West Bank Demerara-East Bank Essequibo), Senior Superintendent Linden Lord confirmed that ranks from the Division were instructed to take the car, the mechanic, and others who gave statements into Police custody.
“The ranks did the groundwork and worked tirelessly to carry out the investigation and ensure that the police constable was found and detained. This would not have been possible without the hard work of the ranks in my Division so they deserve credit for their dedication to this case,” Commander Lord noted.
However, at the time of the chase with CANU, the car in question had five occupants. The rank is being questioned about the whereabouts of the occupants of the car.
When contacted, CANU Head, Major General (ret’d) Michael Atherly told this publication on Monday that one suspect involved in the high-speed chase on Sunday was in the custody of law enforcement officials.
He stated that it is unclear at this point when “the suspect” would appear before the court and what charges he would be facing, however, he will have to face charges related to the destruction of the gate at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
