Driver of vehicle in fatal Long Creek crash was speeding, lost control – Police

Following a fatal smash-up at Long Creek on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway on Thursday evening, Police have confirmed that the driver of the motor canter involved was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the rail of a concrete bridge. The incident claimed the life of 23-year-old Isiah Malachi Williams, a porter from Wismar, Linden.
Based on initial reports, the accident occurred at about 21:30h and involved motor canter GRR 7067, which was at that time being driven by a 31-year-old truck driver from One Mile, Wismar, Linden.
Police stated that the vehicle was proceeding along the highway at a fast rate of speed and, in the vicinity of Long Creek, the driver lost control and collided with the left side rail of a concrete bridge.
As a result of the collision, the driver and Williams were flung from the vehicle and fell onto the roadway. Another occupant, a 27-year-old porter from Wismar, Linden, was also pinned inside the wreckage.
The driver and the other injured men were taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where Williams was pronounced dead. The driver and the other occupant, however, were treated and discharged.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver showed no traces of alcohol in his system. He remains in Police custody assisting with investigations.
