…representing Guyana at major infrastructure development forums in China
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill is presently in China, where he engaged a number of executives from top Chinese construction firms that are currently undertaking a number of major infrastructure projects in Guyana.
Among those the Minister engaged were the global executive leadership of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and China CAMC Engineering Co Ltd.
In a statement on Thursday, Edghill said, “Discussions focused heavily on project implementation, challenges affecting ongoing works, lessons learned, and strategic measures to improve project delivery in support of Guyana’s national development objectives.”

CRCC is involved in the building out key infrastructure projects in Guyana. Last year, the company completed the US$260 million new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge and is now working on the new Wismar-Mackenzie Bridge in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Earlier this year, the public works Minister had reported that the Linden Bridge would be completed in June 2026. The 233-metre-long fixed, high-span precast concrete bridge will feature four lanes and will replace the previous two-lane steel structure.
Meanwhile, China CAMC Engineering is playing a major role in modernising Guyana’s public health infrastructure. Over the past year, the company completed six new modern regional hospitals across Guyana at Diamond, East Bank Demerara; Enmore, East Coast Demerara; De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara; Lima, Essequibo Coast; Bath Settlement, West Bank Berbice; and Skeldon, Corentyne, Berbice.
The company is currently contracted to design and construct a new modern general hospital at Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni Mazaruni). The sod was turned back in April for the new Euros 136.1 million state-of-the-art facility, which is expected to be completed within two years.
Nevertheless, these engagements took place on the side-lines of the 12th China–LAC Infrastructure Forum and the 17th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum in Macao, China, where Minister Edghill is representing Guyana. He is accompanied by Head of Procurement and Contracts at the Public Works Ministry, Andy Mahadeo.
These two high-level events bring together Government officials, industry leaders, development partners, and technical experts from across the region and beyond to discuss emerging trends, best practices, and innovations in infrastructure development.
Optimising benefits
Edghill served as one of the keynote speakers, underscoring that Guyana’s invitation to the forum strongly signals its position as a rising leader in the infrastructure sector.
Reaffirming the spirit of bi-regional South-South cooperation, Edghill emphasised that Guyana and the other States of Latin America and the Caribbean look forward to working closely with China to strengthen the cooperation implementation process, with a view to optimising the benefits that can accrue to both sides.
“We have clear developmental visions, ambitious infrastructure plans, rich natural resources and a deep commitment to sustainable development. Guyana, which I have the honour of representing, is one of the most rapidly developing economies in the world. We are consciously heightening our investments in infrastructural projects, to which China has been a major partner.”
“This 12th China-LAC Infrastructure Forum is not merely a forum but a bold recommitment to the declaration that China and Latin America and the Caribbean are partners in development. To this end, we all remain committed to the shared vision of a green, digital, and connected future,” Edghill stated.
The Minister further highlighted that Guyana looks forward to continued collaboration with like-minded states to effectively confront global challenges while working towards the sustainable development of their respective countries and peoples.
He posited that a programme of cooperation for inclusive development across the divide is entirely achievable through committed partnerships. To achieve this, he urged delegates to pursue a dedicated plan of action targeting the enhancement of the partnership between China and Latin America and the Caribbean.
“Innumerable opportunities abound for us to build out areas of cooperation and to strengthen collaboration mechanisms, such as joint projects, capacity building, and knowledge sharing,” Minister Edghill noted.
It was further noted that Guyana’s active participation reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining constructive engagement with international partners while aggressively advancing its agenda of modernising and expanding critical public infrastructure for the benefit of all Guyanese.
