Elderly couple injured in Lamaha Street smashup

An elderly couple is now nursing injuries about their bodies following a two-vehicle collision at the corners of Camp and Lamaha Streets, Georgetown on Friday evening. The names of the two injured people were not

immediately available but Guyana Times understands that they were taken to a private medical institution.

Reports are a minibus was seen leaving the 704 Sport bar at about 22:00h and shortly afterwards collided with a car bearing registration number PNN 6766.

This newspaper was told that the car was crossing the intersection at Camp and Lamaha Streets when the minibus allegedly slammed into the left side of the vehicle causing it to spin several times and ended up in the nearby canal.

Guyana Times understands that elderly couple was trapped in the car after it landed in the canal but were rescued by public spirited citizens.

The elderly man was reportedly in an unconscious state when he was pulled from his motorcar. The minibus, BTT 2088 ended up crashing into an electric pole in the area. The minibus at the time was carrying one passenger in the front seat. An eyewitness told Guyana Times that the minibus was speeding when the accident occurred.

“It looks like the driver ignored the traffic light and although the amber light was blinking, he did not stop as a precautionary measure… he just drive straight over… the car came from the direction of the Passport office and was turning into Lamaha Street.”

The driver of the minibus who was taken into Police custody and a breathalyzer test was conducted. The results reportedly showed that the man was above the legal limit.

Speaking briefly with this newspaper the driver of the minibus, said that he was driving along Lamaha Street heading to Main Street when the motor car made a sudden turn in front of himas he approached the intersection at Camp and Lamaha Streets.

He noted the he attempted to avoid the collision but it was too late. Both vehicles, he noted collided and spun several times before coming to a halt. According to him he was immediately taken into Police custody and later learnt that the elderly couple was admitted to hospital.

When asked if he was consuming alcohol, he responded claiming “I had two beers”. The Police have launched an investigation into the accident. (Bhisham Mohamed)
