Empowering Guyanese girls will lead to meaningful national contributions – RDC Chair
Empowering Guyanese girls will lead to them making meaningful contributions to national development. This was according to Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Chairperson Genevieve Allen, who was at the time speaking at a function in observance of International Day for the Girl Child.

Allen explained that Guyanese girls are fortunate, adding, “I will like to let you know that according to statistics, 1.4 billion girls are without education and we are so fortunate here today in Guyana to have the privilege to have access to education, to have access to healthcare, and to have access to internet access as well”.
October 11 has been given the name International Day for the Girl Child since 2012 by the United Nations, and Guyana has joined in with rest of the world to observe the day.
In recognition of the day, the Ministry of the Presidency, in collaboration with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region Four and Massy Industries, hosted a forum themed: “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”.
This event, hosted at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Secondary School, East Coast Demerara, was aimed at ensuring Guyanese girls are empowered through interactive programmes that are designed to develop their skills and abilities.
Bringing the curtains down, she encouraged the audience that, “before you empower a young boy, it is good to also empower a young girl. You empower one girl, you empower an entire village, you empower one girl, you empower an entire nation, you empower one girl you, empower the entire world”.
The International Day of the Girl Child was set aside by the UN to promote human rights and girls’ empowerment. The main aim is to shed light and to address the many needs and challenges girls around the world face; some of which include lack of education, abuse, and discrimination.
Participating schools of this event were the LBI Secondary, Beterverwagting Secondary, Plaisance Secondary, Buxton Secondary School and the Beterverwagting Educational and Welfare Club.
