Essequibo businessman slapped with traffic-related charges

Thirty-five-year-old Essequibo businessman Rajit Daljit was on Monday slapped with several traffic-related charges when he appeared at the Charity Magistrate’s Court. The businessman of New Road, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, was charged in connection with offences committed on Monday, April 20, 2026, along the Charity Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
He was charged with failing to give his name and address; failing to wear a seatbelt; failing to display an identification mark on the rear of the vehicle; using an uninsured motor vehicle; using an unlicensed motor vehicle; using an uncertified motor vehicle; failing to produce a driver’s licence; having a defective brake light; having a defective indicator; and failing to maintain the motor vehicle.
On Monday, he appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, where he pleaded guilty to failing to give his name and address and was fined $10,000 or two weeks’ imprisonment in default.
He also pleaded guilty to failing to wear a seatbelt and was fined $7500 or two weeks’ imprisonment in default; failure to have an identification mark on the rear of the vehicle, which carried a fine of $150,000 or three months’ imprisonment; and failure to produce a driver’s licence, which carried a fine of $10,000 or two weeks’ imprisonment.
For the offence of driving an uncertified vehicle, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $20,000. He will return to court on June 29, 2026.
