Essequibo Coast family accuses Police of brutality

A family from Lot 621 Onderneeming Sandpit, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) is calling for a thorough investigation to be launched into the alleged Police brutality which took place late Friday evening.fernando-federicks

Reports are Fernando Federicks was picked up by Police for questioning into a series of breaking and entering and larceny that occurred in the village.

According to man’s mother, Anita Federicks, her son was apprehended on Friday night around 21:00h for questioning. She said in order to maintain peace, she asked her son to comply after the Police surrounded her home with guns. According to the woman, at about 22:00h, a Criminal Investigations Department rank attached to the Suddie Police Station took black bags and placed it around her son’s face and began to kick and stomp the man to his chest. She said that she could not bear to see her son beaten in such a manner. According to the woman, it was not until Saturday morning that her son was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was admitted.

The woman is calling on the Police Commissioner to intervene in the matter.

When Guyana Times contacted Divisional Commander Khali Pareshram on the matter, he noted that Federicks is a suspect in several break and enter reports but was not aware than he was hospitalised. He did however say that he was told that the suspect was taken to the hospital for observation. According to the Commander, the suspect is part of a gang, and as such, was arrested to assist with investigations. He however promised to investigate the allegations of brutality.
