Essequibo Coast man mysteriously dies in Police lock-ups

An investigation has been launched into the mysterious death of an Essequibo Coast resident, who was in the lockups at the Anna Regina Police Station on Sunday evening.
Dead is 46-year-old Om Singh, of Lot 35 Danielstown, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Reports are the now dead carpenter was arrested on Sunday evening about 21:45h by ranks of the Anti-Crime Patrol Unit after they responded to a report of domestic abuse.
It is alleged that Singh and his wife were engaged in a heated argument and the neighbours contacted the Police.
Nalini Singh, daughter of the now dead man told Guyana Times that after she learnt of her father’s arrest, she visited the Police Station and saw him lying on the bench motionless.
Upon enquiring about her father’s condition, she was reportedly told by Police that “they did what they have to do”.
However, at 02:30h on Monday, the Police ranks visited the home of the now dead man and requested his Identification Card (ID) or passport.
It was at this time the relatives were told that the man had died, and the Police needed some form of identification.
In a state of shock, the relatives related that Singh did not suffer from any illnesses and went to the Police Station in good health.
On the other hand, the Police related that Singh suffered a seizure and was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Relatives are of the belief that Singh might have been beaten while in the Police lock-ups and are calling on the relevant authorities to have a thorough investigation.
The now dead man’s reputed wife was subsequently taken into custody.
The man’s body was taken to the Onderneeming Funeral Home to await an autopsy.
