Every household will receive $25,000 – PM reassures

COVID-19 cash grant

The Prime Minister in discussion with a resident during the outreach

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said that every household will receive the COVID-19 cash grant being distributed by Government.
He made this reassuring comment during a community outreach at Paradise on the East Coast of Demerara on Saturday.
Prime Minister Phillips told residents that the first phase of the distribution had catered for primary households. Nevertheless, he said that the second phase, which caters to secondary households (renters) has begun and will also include primary households that were missed in the initial phase.
“Pink slip or not, the team is coming back into every community, we have started in the interior regions already and we are going to work our way to the coast, the money is there… we said every household, it will happen, they will get back to you,” he explained.
After taking office in August 2020, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced that every household is slated to receive a $25,000 cash grant to help cushion the effects of the pandemic
The grant also sought to stimulate the economy by increasing people’s spending power.

Distribution subsequently began on September 29, 2020, in the farthest regions, given their vulnerable economic state.
Meanwhile, earlier in April of this year, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Nigel Dharamlall said that a whopping $7 billion was already distributed on the first phase.
He further announced that the second phase of the Government’s $25,000 per household COVID-19 cash grant initiative would begin soon.
The second phase, the Minister said, will cost about $1 billion, with over 16,000 pink slips to be looked into and verified. The pink slips were given to persons who did not receive their cash grants in the first phase for some reason or the other.
The cash grant initiative, since its announcement, has been welcomed by Guyanese citizens.
