An ex-policeman and his wife, who also served in the Guyana Police Force, was on Friday granted bail by Magistrate Peter Hugh when they appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court where narcotics trafficking charges were read to them.
Rokeshia Collins and Khushyal Grant, of No 2 Village, East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), were jointly charged for having nine kilograms of cannabis in their possession on April 20.
Both parties pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
The court heard that on the day in question, ranks intercepted a west-bound motor car at a police checkpoint in the vicinity of the
Berbice River Bridge. At the time of the interception, the couple and their two minor children were in the motor car.
However, a search on the vehicle unearthed seven parcels of marijuana and as the driver was being cautioned of the offence, Collins reportedly fled the checkpoint in the car along with the children.
Her husband was nevertheless arrested and the police launched a search for the woman. The police went to the home of the couple where they saw the motor car but there were no signs of the woman and the two children.
She was subsequently arrested and charged.
The couple was released on $150,000 bail each and will make their next court appearance on May 12, 2020.
