Fatal stabbing of Berbice duo – Family calls for justice, says ‘truth must come out’

One day after 36-year-old Tyrone Captain, a labourer of Eversham, Corentyne, Berbice and 23-year-old Wreford Vincent Trim also called “Junior Browne”, a vendor of Durban Backlands, Georgetown were stabbed to death, relatives believe that the ‘truth’ as to what took place will come to light. Police said the incident occurred at about 09:30h and preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation occurred involving Captain, Trim and the 29-year-old salesman of Industry, East Coast Demerara (ECD). During the confrontation, both Captain and Trim were fatally stabbed. Trim collapsed and died while attempting to escape his attacker while Captain succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The 29-year-old suspect was arrested and remained in police custody as investigations continued. Police also recovered a knife suspected to have been used during the incident. The weapon was lodged pending examination. Investigators have obtained CCTV footage, which police said forms part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The bodies of Captain and Trim are awaiting post-mortem examinations (PMEs). Meanwhile, at Eversham, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), where Captain grew up, his relatives are calling for justice and say they want the truth about the circumstances that led to his death. Captain’s cousin, Charlene Sutherland, said she was selling at the market when she received the devastating news. “I was at the market selling, and I heard that my cousin got stabbed and died,” she recalled.

Sutherland said Captain moved away from Eversham approximately eight years ago but continued to maintain contact with relatives in the community, particularly his aunt and grandmother. He had returned to Eversham as recently as about three months ago following the death of an aunt. “He normally communicated with his aunt and his grandmother. He normally visited. Three months ago, my aunt passed away, and he was here. They always keep in contact with him,” Sutherland said. She remembered her cousin as a loving, hardworking and caring man. “He was very loving and hardworking, manly, caring,” she related.
Sutherland also described Captain as a quiet person who was not known by his family to be easily angered. “He was very quiet; he was never a tempered person. So, I was sad when I heard that news,” she said. While relatives have heard reports about what allegedly occurred in Georgetown, Sutherland made it clear that the family does not know firsthand what triggered the deadly confrontation. “What I’m speaking of is what the news said because we weren’t there. So, I won’t get down to details about that,” she said. It is for that reason, she indicated, that the family wants investigators to establish exactly what transpired. “Because he didn’t deserve to die like that,” Sutherland said. Calling for the person responsible to face justice, she added: “The person that stabbed him, justice must serve. The truth must come out.” Sutherland said Captain had previously worked in Guyana’s interior, although she was unable to say what work he was doing immediately before his death. he also said she knew him to be the father of a daughter. For Captain’s relatives in Eversham, the police investigation — including the CCTV footage now in investigators’ possession — is expected to provide answers about the confrontation that claimed his life.
As the family awaits those answers, Sutherland said their demand remains simple. “The truth must come out,” she said.
