Over 300 Reg 5 residents receive house lots bringing homeownership closer

More than 300 residents of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) received house lot allocations on Thursday during an allocation exercise held at the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) Regional Housing Office. The exercise forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to address the housing needs of families across the region and provide more residents with access to affordable land for homeownership. The allocation exercise also followed through on a commitment made by Vice President (VP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo to residents, underscoring the Government’s continued focus on expanding access to housing opportunities and improving the quality of life for families in that region. Among the beneficiaries were applicants who were unable to secure allocations during the Ministry’s recent ‘Dream Realised ‘ Housing Drive held at the Rosignol Stelling Tarmac.

Thursday’s event, therefore, offered another opportunity for these applicants to progress towards homeownership. Residential lots across the low, moderate, and middle-income categories were allocated in Track A, Waterloo, and Track C, Experiment, ensuring families from various income brackets were included.
The exercise was led by the Director of Operations at CH&PA, Denise King-Tudor; Operations Manager, Gaitree Ramawad; and Regional Housing Officer, Arianne Barratt-Rodrigues, supported by agency staff. Throughout the process, beneficiaries were guided on the allocation procedure and provided with essential information on the next steps to complete their transactions. For over 300 beneficiaries, these allocations mean more than just access to land; they lay the foundation for families to establish permanent homes, increase security and create lasting assets for future generations.
Back in June, the Government had begun implementing plans to clear the housing backlog within that region, with up to 1,000 house lots being made available.
Housing Minister Collin Croal had stated that the exercise represents the start of the Government ‘s effort to fulfill a commitment to clear all pending housing applications in the region during its current term in office.

He had explained that while the CH&PA database reflects more than 4,000 applications in Region Five, officials recognise that some applicants may have relocated, migrated, or secured housing elsewhere.
He said the Ministry has been working with the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission to secure additional lands to meet the demand. Croal noted that applicants who attended the previous allocation exercise in October 2024 but were unable to receive lots because of limited availability were given priority consideration during Friday’s activity. Those allocations are being made in new housing developments at Experiment and another area identified as Track A-O.
He said the Ministry now has sufficient land to cater to all applicants attending the current exercise and indicated that additional allocations could be made if necessary.
