Fatima, Coromoto Houses seal 1st victories

The badminton courts at Marian Academy came alive on Tuesday as the institution staged its annual inter-house team championships. The team set-up featured boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles, with each house playing to acquire more individual wins than the others to take the overall game.

The four house teams

The school’s four houses – Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Coromoto and Our Lady of Guadeloupe, took to the courts on Tuesday to entertain their peers and earn themselves some much-needed points which will go a long way to securing the championships.
In the first round of the group play-offs, Fatima House were pitted against Guadeloupe House and went on to defeat them 3-2.
Meanwhile, Coromoto House faced off with Lourdes House in an encounter which Coromoto won 5-0.
In the first team game, Fatima’s Randy Hamilton won the boys’ singles against Guadeloupe’s DeAndre Springer 21-9; however, Fatima’s Nia Allen lost to Jayde DaSilva 8-21 in the girls’ singles. Fatima won the boys’ doubles as Jaden Totaram and Grame Carpenter defeated Alexander Ally and DeAndre Springer 21-7. Fatima also took the girls’ doubles when Kelliann Sauers and Nia Allen overcame Gabryel Fiedtkou and Tashauna McGarrell 21-7. However, Guadeloupe regrouped to take the mixed doubles when Randy Hamilton and Kelliann Sauers lost to DeAndre Springer and Jayde DaSilva 9-2.
The following group match saw Coromoto and Lourdes Houses in a one-sided contest. The boys’ singles was taken by Coromoto’s Matthew Beharry when he defeated Zachary Persaud 21-10. The girls’ singles went the same way as Coromoto tasted victory again when Lesha Singh overpowered Isabella Ramjohn 21-18. The boys’ doubles saw Matthew Beharry and Vikash Mootoo defeating Roland Hamilton and Zachary Persaud 21-11 in another win for Coromoto. In similar fashion, their female counterparts won the girls’ doubles after Ashley Escarraga and Jada Mohan got past Ella Sahai and IsaBella Ramjohn 21-13. Coromoto eventually sealed their 5-0 win when they secured a victory in the mixed doubles. There, Vikash Mootoo and Reba Ramlall defeated Lucas Persaud and Ella Sahai 21-8.
The inter-house tournament will continue next Tuesday, October 30 at the school’s courts (auditorium) from 15:00h.
