FIBA 3X3 Americup 2021: Guyana women knocked out in main draw

… Men fail to make it past qualifying draw

Team Guyana, both men and women, began their journey in the FIBA 3×3 Americup 2021; however, the men were eliminated in the qualifying draw, while the women advanced to the main draw.

The Guyanese women were knocked out in the main draw

Regrettably, the competition was too good for the Guyanese women, and they lost all two of their matches – to Chile and Mexico respectively.

Women’s Qualifying Draw

The Guyanese women’s qualifying draw encounter with Guatemala ended 20-16 in their favour, as they edged out the Guatemalans by 4 points. Joy Brown led the charge with 18 points, while Jada Mohan chipped in with 2 points. Scoring for Guatemala were Nathaly Pinelo, Mishelle García, Vicky Juarez and Gabriela Vallecillo with respective points 3,6,6,1.

In their second game, the Guyanese women lost to their Jamaica counterparts 16-20. Although the Jamaicans were much tougher, the Guyanese ladies did not go down without giving them a run for their money. Scoring for Guyana were Joy Brown with 13 points, while Kesann Charles and Jada Mohan chipped in with 2 and 1 point respectively. Scoring for the Jamaicans were Jose-Ann Johnson, Ashalee Gordon and Antoinette Bannister with 7,2,11 points respectively.

Main Draw

The Guyanese ladies then made it through to the pool stage, but lost to Chile 18-13. Joy Brown again was the standout, as she bagged 9 points while Jada Mohan chipped in with 4.

In their matchup against Mexico, the Guyanese ladies were defeated 17-11. Joyann Brown was the only standout for the local side, registering all the points for Guyana. In the end, it was not enough to save the Guyanese ladies, hence their participation in the tournament was ended.

Men’s Qualifying Draw

In the Guyanese men’s encounter with Guatemala, they had to endure a fight, and that game ended 19-18, with Guyana edging out their Guatemalan counterparts in the nick of time. Travis Burnette led the charge with 9 points, while Timothy Thompson and Ryan Stephney contributed 5 points each.

In game two, the Guyanese men lost 21-13 to the Guatemalans. Timothy Thompson led the fight with 7 points, while Ryan Stephney and Travis Burnette chipped in with 5 and 1 point each. However, it wasn’t enough to save them, and Guatemala advanced while they were eliminated.
