Five Star school Oronoque, but dominated by PK United

Indigenous Heritage Football Games’ NWD qualifiers…

Although the sunshine was brilliant, the Fitzburg ground at Port Kaituma, NWD was still muddy. That, however, did practically nothing to prevent the Five Star Football Club from producing an excellent display of sportsmanship as they administered a 5-1 hammering on Oronoque Football Club when the Indigenous Heritage Football Games’ qualifiers got underway in Matarkai.

Watched by a sprinkling of spectators that included MATARKAI’s Heritage Committee representatives Ronaldo Rodrigues and Ignatius Adams (DEO), this mining community football club got off to a flying start in the first half of the game, with Ronaldo Abrams and Karl Thompson each booting a goal to end the first half 2-nil in favour of Five Star.
Upon resumption of play, Oronoque FC’s star player Jamol James managed to pull one back, but that only stoked the appetite of the gold-outfitted ‘hungry’ miners from five Star FC, whose deeper dig into the recesses of their resolve produced a goal each for Tian Mendonca, Ewart Mingo and Mark Williams to sink the Heritage hopes of Oronoque FC, who have suffered back-to-back losses.
In the other fixture, 2017 Indigenous Heritage Games Football champion and double semifinalists, PK United FC, took on Sebai FC, who had earlier defeated Oronoque in the opening encounter at Fitzburg.
With now more than 300 spectators in attendance, the local star-studded PK United FC team, fielding a couple of players with National and Georgetown club experience, defeated Sebai 5-nil. The lads from the reservation were visibly tired, and so were unable to convert a couple of easy chances.
Top PK strikers Cordell Dybala Mitchell and Keanu Williams each blasted a double, while Orlando Cupido chipped in with a lone goal.
With Five Star FC and PK United FC both having recorded wins, their highly anticipated matchup was a thriller, but PK United prevailed 3-nil over Five Star, and now head the points table with 6 points, even as they still have one more game to go. They are likely to emerge as the MATARKAI champions.
PK United football prodigies Cordell Dybala Mitchell and Keanu Williams have continued their rich form, each hammering home a goal in the game against Five Star to become joint leading goal-scorers of the tournament with a triple each.
Their team mate and senior custodian, Cornel St Romain, belted the other single in the game against Five Star to join the goal-scorers of the playoff.
