Football, cricket qualifiers see furious action

The Matarkai Indigenous Heritage football and cricket qualifiers continued over the weekend with Sebai Invincible FC defeating Oronoque FC 4-0 in women’s football action on Saturday, to top the points table with 6 points from 2 games and win the bragging rights to represent Matarkai at the regional playoffs scheduled for September 7th and 8th in the township of Mabaruma, NWD, Region One.
Sebai’s Invincible Talons FC striker Feona Benjamin continued her brilliance with a double, which took this leading goal-scorer’s total to six in the competition; while Candacy and Ravina Benjamin each chipped in with one goal for the 4-nil win.
Five Star FC also humbled Sebai FC 3-2 in a male team game to secure 6 points from 2 wins and 1 loss in the 3 games they played.
Five Star FC’s Mark Broomes scored a double while Karl Thompson contributed a single with a brilliant bicycle kick to record the Five Star 3, while Dixon Benjamin and Sherwin Garraway scored for Sebai in a losing cause.
The game between Oronoque FC and PK United FC ended in “Forfeiture” on Sunday last, as Oronoque forfeited the game and consequently lost same 3-0 to PK United. This has been provided for in the rules of the competition.
PK United will now play Matthews Ridge Junior FC in the Matarkai finals today at Fitzburg Recreational Ground, starting at 15:00 hours.
The International Import and Supplies cricket competition between Port Kaituma and Canal Bank was washed out, thus the teams will reach on August 25th at noon to play a selection game to decide who forms the Matarkai cricket squad that would face Mabaruma and Moruca in the Regional Competition to be played at Mabaruma on September 7/8.
All the action in these qualifiers is taking place at the Sebai and Oronoque recreational grounds at Port Kaituma in Region One.
