Four more qualify for CARIFTA Games

Guyana’s CARIFTA 2022 contingent to Jamaica has grown by a whopping four, as the young athletes showed up and ‘showed out’ over the last weekend at the second local trials for the regional event, held at the Leonora Track and Field Facility.

Four more youth athletes have earned a spot at the CARIFTA Games

Shamar Horatio of Ramos James Athletics was arguably the star of the show, securing qualifying times in two events for the CARIFTA Games.
Attoya Harvey meanwhile added another event to her lineup with a second qualification. Javon Roberts, Trevon Hamer and Naris McPherson were the other qualifiers.
Shamar Horatio, competing in the Boys 17-19 category, first secured a slot in the 100m event after crossing the line a hundredth of a second earlier than he needed to in order to hit the 10.55s qualification mark.
Later, he sealed a spot in the sprint double, clocking 21.41s in the 200m race. The qualifying standard was 21.50s.
Still in the boys’ 17-19 category, Running Brave’s Wesley Tyndall leaped a whopping 7.30m to complement his previous long jump. In the triple-jump event, Trevon Hamer from Mercury Fast Laners also booked his ticket to Jamaica with a 14.91m jump.
Running Brave’s Attoya Harvey, after qualifying for the 13-16 1500m event in the first trial, sealed a spot in the 800m with a 2.18.06 run. However, another qualifier came out of that race, with Naris McPherson (Harvey’s clubmate) crossing the line in 2.18.24, just ahead of the 2.19.00 qualifying time.
Previously qualifying for the Games were Harvey, Tyndall, Adriel Austin, Keliza Smith and Anissa Gibbons.
The CARIFTA Games are scheduled to be hosted from April 16-18 in Jamaica. This has been the second of three trials, with the third expected to be held early in March.
