GCB to commence long overdue coaching interviews ‘shortly’

– Chanderpaul not in Head Coach race

Proceedings at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) are somewhat quiet since the star-studded Bissoondyal Singh-led administration took office. According to reliable sources, the Regional 4-Day tournament is set to commence on January 28, 2022, and Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, also said first-class cricket is a priority heading into 2022.

“Red-ball cricket is our number one priority going into the new year. The plans as they stand now are that we begin early February and play a minimum of five rounds of four-day cricket between February and April – May; so, it is a priority, and we are looking to kick-off Regional cricket in early February,” Adams said in a recent press briefing.
In a matter of weeks, the 4-Day tournament will commence, and considering the Christmas season, the Guyana Jaguars players must commence training together as soon as possible, since gelling together as a unit is of great importance. What would these training be without a Guyana Jaguars Head Coach and Assistant Coach?
Back in August, the GCB, in “low-key fashion, “advertised that the positions of Head Coach and Assistant Coach are up for grabs. Applications from different individuals have since been sent in, and this publication was reliably informed that Esuan Crandon is among those that sent in applications and will be up for interview shortly.

Esuan Crandon and Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Additionally, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who served as Crandon’s assistant/manager in the past, and is also involved in CWI level-three coaching programme, is not in the race. GCB Vice President and CWI Director Hilbert Foster heads a six-member panel that would conduct this professional interview process. These interviews were scheduled to be conducted during last week, but are now rescheduled at a later day.
It was also made evident that, for the first time, the GCB would appoint a female to coach the female cricketers. The current four-day champions are Barbados Pride, who ended the Guyana Jaguars five-year reign under the captaincy of Leon Johnson in a truncated season back in March 2019. (Brandon Corlette)
