GDF rank dies in horrific Homestretch Avenue accident

A 36-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) sergeant of Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown,died following a horrific two-vehicle collision along Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
Dead is Brian Mitchell. A seven-year-old child who was in his vehicle also sustained injuries.

Reports are that on Tuesday evening, Mitchell was driving motor car PNN 5516 when he reportedly swerved and collided with motor car PVV 3684, which was being driven by Taishan Shanks and had a female passenger.
Police have since said that investigations revealed that motor car PVV 3684 was proceeding east along Homestretch Avenue while motor car PNN 5516 was proceeding west. According to Police, as Shanks was in the vicinity of Help and Shelter, he saw the other vehicle swerve from the southern side of the road, from behind another vehicle and end up in his path. As a result, his vehicle and motor car PNN 5516 collided.
Mitchell and the seven-year-old were picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where the driver was subsequently pronounced dead. The child was treated for a broken leg and later admitted to the medical facility.
Shanks and the lone passenger of motor car PVV 3684 were also taken to the medical institution where they were treated for lacerations about their bodies and later discharged.
Investigations are ongoing.
Just two months ago, two young people died after the car in which they were travelling crashed into a utility pole along Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
Twenty-year-old Dakera Gittens, of Festival City, died on the spot while 18-year-old Tonika Halley, of Phase 2 East La Penitence, Georgetown, died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Based on reports, the dead youths and others were having a night out and as they were heading along Homestretch Avenue, the driver lost control of the motor car and slammed into the pole.
The car then flipped several times and ended up in a nearby trench. At the time of the accident, four persons were in the vehicle.
Following the accident, Rayon Alves, 19, of East La Penitence, was arraigned for the deaths of the two young people. Alves was slapped with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. (G9)
