GDF squeeze past Ann’s Grove

Only two days of competition remain before the curtains come down on round one of the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League III, and action is programmed for Wednesday, May 2, at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground. This past Friday, defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) contested the last of the league games for round one against Ann’s Grove, in the feature of a double-header that had the East Bank U-15 GFF-Scotiabank Academy Training Centre team humble a Lady Jags select side.

Next Saturday, April 28, the National U-17s will battle the Under-20s, while a President’s XI will take on the Elite League All Stars.
GDF were able to secure a 2-1 come-from-behind win against the league bottom runners, as Maxton Adams drew first blood on the brink of half time.
However, Abunicki Benjamin made his presence felt in the second half with a 56th minute goal to draw scores level.
In the 75th minute, Benjamin was able to put GDF ahead, and keep them in contention to attempt the retention of their title.
Earlier in the night, EDFA U-15 dismantled the Lady Jags 7- 0. The national side was able to keep the improving youngsters at bay for more than 50 percent of the first half, but once Ishmael Palsuram broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, it was a completely different ball game.
Shoran James scored in the 41st minute to put the U-15s ahead by two-possessions ahead of the second 45 minutes.
Fitness seemed to be the key, as a wilting female side conceded four more goals before the regulation time whistle sounded.
Nikosey Gordon fashioned a second half hat-trick to add to the opposition’s misery. He scored in the 73rd, 78th and 81st minutes, while his teammates Devon Padmore (56th) and Kevon Scott (90th) accounted for the other two goals.
