German’s Restaurant has given support to the Guyana Under-21 Women’s Baseball team, which are preparing to make history come next month when they visit Halifax, Canada to play in an invitational tournament from August 4 to 8.
Proprietor of German’s Restaurant Clinton Urling made the timely donation to team captain Nia Gonsalves last week.
Urling, who once headed a Normalisation Committee of the Guyana Football Federation, said: “Sport is a pathway to so many things: education, life’s lessons and empowerment. I look forward to seeing our ladies represent the Golden Arrowhead with pride and poise.”
The team, which feature some of the top young ladies, most of whom hail from Berbice, have written the subject as part of their Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) curriculum and have now gone on to playing and coaching.
Captain Gonsalves, of the team also known as “Kanimas”, thanked Urling on behalf of the team, for his continuous support of sport in
Guyana and promised to make a path for future female baseball teams to follow.
Director of Sport, Chris Jones, on behalf of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Wendy Quinn, wife of British Ambassador Gregory Quinn, have also thrown their support behind the ladies who will attempt to break new ground.
The Kanimas will play in the Canadian Women’s Invitational and the matches will be broadcast live on E-Networks.
