Good Hope family living in fear after constant threats from villagers
An East Coast Demerara family of three is fearful for their lives since their neighbours continuously send them death threats.
In a telephone interview with Guyana Times on Saturday, Chandra Jainarayan of Lot 78 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), said that this has been happening for the past two months.
The woman explained that on Father’s Day this year, her son, neighbour, her husband along with her and her grandchildren were hanging out on their bridge when two men who live five houses away from theirs passed several times and threw a tantrum at her son.
Her son, Ravi Jainarayan, when questioned, was left baffled at the men’s remarks. He claimed that he was unaware of any issue he has with them. As such, he ignored their antics.
However, after the men realised that Ravi was ignoring them, they went up to him and started to assault him and this undoubtedly led to an altercation.
During that time, four other relatives of the two men arrived at the scene and joined in to beat the young man.
As a result, he received several chops to his head and about his body, thus causing him to collapse.
His 62-year-old father, Dasrath Jainarayan, ran to his rescue and was also attacked and chopped by the group of men who were armed with shovels, pieces of woods, and a crowbar.
Both the young man and his father were rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state where they were admitted and treated.
Following the incident, Chandra said a report was made at the Cove and John Police Station, as well as the Vigilance Police Station, and the attackers were summoned.
At the station, the men again threatened the family and were sure that the matter would be swept under the rug.
The woman is, however, alleging that a sum of money was handed over to an officer by the attackers in her presence.
Since then, the aggrieved family has been following up the case with respect to charges being instituted against the men but they have reached a dead end.
At one point, they were informed that the case file was sent to the DPP for advice.
“I kept going to the police since then and nothing. This thing happened since the 21st of June, and nobody didn’t get charge. Every time I go to the police, they keep saying nothing ain’t come back from the DPP. I went to the Commander, they call the police and find out the same thing; l myself went to the DPP, they said nothing is there”, the woman explained.
Without charges being instituted, the woman said she remains fearful for her family since they received further threats.
“The people them that did this comes till in front of my gate, we were sitting there is six of them. Two women is included. My husband was in the hospital and he is a diabetic he is not well since he got that hit. My grandchildren was here and they see everything since that we are scared for their lives. My grandchildren were screaming for their father and grandfather when it was happening.”
The woman said since her husband received the blow to his head, it has begun to affect his brain. The family is calling out to higher authorities to look into the matter since they claim the at the police are dragging their feet on the matter. (La Wanda Mc Allister)
