Govt disburses $28.9B in cash grants almost 290,000 citizens – Dr Singh

Senior Minister with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh

– urges public not to panic, assuring all will collect grant

As the Guyana Government continues the $100,000 cash grant distribution exercise, some $28.956 billion has already been disbursed to approximately 289,565 citizens across the country.
In his latest update on the distribution exercise, Senior Minister with Responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh revealed on Thursday evening that of the 289,565 persons who have received their cash grants, a total of 265,281 beneficiaries received their money via direct deposit into their bank accounts.
“This number is itself a very impressive figure and one that I’m pleased to share with you because it reflects how easily persons can access benefits if they have a bank account and they use the online and digital technologies that we’re deploying,” the Minister noted.
According to Dr Singh, in keeping with a promise made by President Dr Irfaan Ali, special arrangements have been implemented for persons living in remote and isolated communities, recognising that banking services are less readily available in those areas.
With some 289,565 cash grants disbursed to date, the Finance Minister said this is an extremely impressive result and lauded those involved in the process, especially the developers of the digital portal, which allows citizens to register online and receive their grants directly into their bank accounts.
This portal, Singh pointed out, has proved its value and utility despite some initial challenges.
“I know some people had difficulties trying the first time or second time to register, but I want to thank the developers who worked on this portal, and I want to thank every single Guyanese person who used the portal, including those who had challenges the first time around and the second time around and still came back and tried a third or fourth time around and eventually got through,” he noted.

Don’t panic
Minister Singh went on to urge Guyanese who are yet to register to do so and provide their bank account details to receive the cash grant in their bank account. But even as he encourages the use of the online portal, the Finance Minister assured that all eligible Guyanese will eventually get their $100,000.
“A number of persons have been asking what would happen to those who don’t have bank accounts, and I want to say to you that you too, once you are eligible, will receive your cash grants, but it will take a little bit longer for us to process those because obviously we’re going to have to go through a registration process, and then we’re going to have to take other measures to get your cash grant paid to you.”
“So, by far the easiest way to receive your cash grant is through a bank account… I’d say to you, those of you who don’t have bank accounts, don’t panic; you will still get your cash grant, but I would suggest that if you don’t have a bank account, you should try to open one… and you will get your cash grant in the comfort of your home, without having to join a line or endure any significant wait. The cash grant will be delivered automatically to your bank account,” Dr Singh stated.
To facilitate the efficient disbursement of the cash grant, the Ministry of Finance, together with the Bank of Guyana, collaborated with financial institutions to simplify the process of opening bank accounts, as well as to allow for the opening of these accounts online.
This latest tranche of cash grant distribution commenced earlier this year, with some 48,858 central Government employees, whose banking information is already available, receiving the first set of direct transfers.
Moreover, the Government has announced that they will also commence home-based registration support for shut-ins, including the elderly and incapacitated persons, using data from old-age pension and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) records.
Additionally, help desks will be established nationwide to assist citizens who have been unable to complete the online registration process. The cash grant programme is open to Guyanese citizens aged 18 and older via the online portal at cashgrant.gov.gy.
During the previous national cash grant initiative, in late 2024 into 2025, more than $60 billion of disposable income was transferred into the pockets of over 600,000 Guyanese. Another $60 billion is expected to be transferred in this second round of distribution.
These two cash distribution exercises come on the heels of the first National Cash Grant of $25,000 per household that was paid when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) resumed office in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
