As part of the Government of Guyana’s continuous commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure across the hinterland, the Health Ministry on Saturday handed over a state-of-the-art water ambulance to the tune of 24.8 million to the regional administration of Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The vessel is specifically designated to serve the residents of the middle and lower Mazaruni areas, significantly strengthening emergency medical evacuation networks and riverine medical outreach capabilities. Subject Minister Dr Frank Anthony during the handing over ceremony stated that it is the Ministry’s broader master plan to build out a seamless transportation and technological grid across interior locations. “We recognise that in Region Seven, we needed to have several river ambulances. On the request of the regional administration, we were able to procure this vessel to assist in bringing patients to central spots, when necessary.”
Dr Anthony emphasised that the integration of this water ambulance alongside previously distributed All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and land ambulances creates a highly connected regional network. Crucially, this mobility is being paired with the Ministry of Health’s ongoing deployment of Telemedicine sites across Region Seven. Under this initiative, community health workers and medexes stationed at remote riverine posts can leverage real-time digital links to consult with specialist doctors, ensuring high-standard clinical guidance synchronously while emergency transport is underway. The water ambulance will be deployed into immediate service within the Mazaruni river clinical network.
