Griffith to defend Urban Benjamin Memorial title today
Team Evolution’s Christopher Griffith will be defending his 2018 Urban Benjamin Memorial Road Race title today, August 18.
Organized by Team Evolution to take place on the roadways of the Essequibo Coast in Region Two, this cycle race will begin at 9:00h outside the Charity Primary School, and cyclists will head to Supenaam and return for the finish at the starting point, after covering a distance of 74 miles.
Christopher Griffith had reigned supreme over 32 other competitors in the senior category in 2018, having clinched the title in two hours 59 minutes 53 seconds. Warren ’40’ McKay had defeated Junior Niles in the Under-45 category, while Ian Jackson had taken top honours over Andrew Spencer and Amit Sankar in the Over-45 category.
In the junior category, Adelie Hoge had defeated Ajay Gopilall and Ralph Seenarine, while Ozia McAuly had defeated Quincy Punch and Julio Melville in the Mountain Bike race.
Cyclists wishing to participate in this race are required to pay an entrance fee of $2,000, while those also needing transportation to the Essequibo Coast are asked to assemble at the National Sports Commission on Homestretch Avenue before 06:00hrs today. The bus will depart promptly at 6:30hrs, along with a separate vehicle to carry the bikes.
Each participant will be responsible for his/her own accommodation and meals in Essequibo. The return ferry will depart Essequibo at 16:00hrs tomorrow, and it is each cyclist’s responsibility to be ready and on the bus for the return trip at 13:00hrs.
