Guyana joins global parliamentary talks in Tanzania 

A Guyanese parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker of the National Assembly and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council Member Manzoor Nadir, is participating in the 153rd IPU Assembly and related meetings in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Assembly is being held from October 5 to 9, 2026, at the Arusha International Conference Centre under the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”
The delegation also includes Minister of Human Services and Social Security Vindhya Persaud, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Warren Kwame McCoy, and Parliamentary Executive Officer Dr Carlleta Charles, who is serving as Secretary to the delegation.

Guyana’s delegation to the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, led by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir. The delegation includes Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Warren Kwame McCoy and Parliamentary Executive Officer Dr Carlleta Charles

Persaud is a member of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians of the IPU, while McCoy is a member of the Bureau of Democracy and Human Rights.
The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the theme of the General Debate.
It is also expected to adopt a resolution titled “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities.” The resolution is being piloted by the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, on which McCoy serves as a Bureau member.
The week-long programme includes meetings of the IPU’s parliamentary bodies, including the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights and the Bureau and Forum of Women Parliamentarians.
The Guyanese delegation will also participate in meetings of the Group of Latin America and Caribbean Parliaments, workshops and side events focusing on the empowerment of persons with disabilities, and other parliamentary activities.
A new IPU President is also expected to be elected during the Assembly, while the Governing Council will elect members to various IPU offices and consider matters related to the organisation’s operations.
The IPU, which was established more than 135 years ago, comprises 184 national parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies. It provides a platform for parliamentarians to promote parliamentary democracy, peace and cooperation and to build relationships among legislators.
