Guyana Prison Service finishes 13th at Inter-continental Inter-prisons Chess Tournament

The Guyana Prison Service’s chess team concluded its participation in the Intercontinental Inter Prisons Chess Tournament with a 13th-place finish among 21 teams after competition began on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Competing under the banner of “Chess for Freedom”, the tournament was sanctioned by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and featured prison teams from countries around the world. The event was played using a round-robin Swiss system format, meaning there were no knockout rounds.

Guyana recorded convincing victories against USA Kansas and the Guyana Youth Team, winning both encounters 4-0. The local side also secured a 3-1 victory over St Lucia during the tournament.
However, Guyana suffered defeats against El Salvador (1-3), Mexico (0-4), and the USA’s Chicago (1-3).
Despite the mixed results, the Guyana Prison Service team managed to finish 13th overall in the international competition, which formed part of FIDE’s global “Chess for Freedom” initiative aimed at promoting rehabilitation and development through chess.
