The United States Government on Friday contributed another tranche of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to Guyana through the COVAX mechanism, amounting to 100, 620 jabs. These will be made available with immediate effect, with pregnant women being targeted. This is in light of recent reports which stated that there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases among pregnant women. In fact, several of them who tested positive for the virus are being monitored at the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown and other medical facilities.
In August, the US had sent 146,250 doses of the vaccine, enabling Government to commence vaccination of children over 12 years of age. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also benefiting from the Pfizer jabs.
In Guyana, over 366,000 first doses have been administered, with over 220,000 second doses for the adult population. More than 25,000 first doses have been delivered to adolescents.
