The Guyana Under-17 team will depart the local shores on Thursday, July 4, 2019, and the Cricket Board has not yet revealed the official squad despite the commencement of the training camp on Friday last.
The players encamped are expected to represent Guyana; the Guyanese will bowl off their tournament against hosts Trinidad and Tobago followed by a clash against Barbados, the defending champions.
Guyana Times Sport visited the La Bonne Intention (LBI) cricket facility, on Tuesday, where the 14-man squad completed an intense indoor nets session.
This publication contacted the team manager, and he explained that the Cricket Board was responsible for announcing the squad.
Further contact was made and it was revealed that the Board would traditionally announce the squad on the eve of departure. Other Caribbean countries have disclosed their official 14-member squads.
The omission and inclusion of certain players in the current training camp may be seen as an area of concern. Currently, the 14 members in the camp are the players who participated in the Inter-County Under-19 Tournament, playing as the Select U-17 team. The likes of Matthew Nandu, Sheldon Charles, Zeynul Ramsammy, Mavindra Dindyal, Chanderpaul Ramraj, Niran Bissu, Sarwan Chaitnarine, Marvan Prashad and Andre Seepersaud are certain picks.
West Indies U-15 players Isai Thorne and Rampertab Ramnauth have not been included in the training camp. However, their West Indies U-15 teammate, Dindyal has been selected. During the Inter-County U-19 Tournament, only Ramnauth was selected, but he had a soft showing with the bat for the Select XI Under-17 squad in the highly-competitive U-19 tournament.
Only time will tell if the current training squad in camp will be changed when the final 14 depart for Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday. (Brandon Corlette)
