Guyana, Windwards book finals berth

WICB Regional Under-19

Both teams finish preliminaries with five wins

Guyana made light work of Barbados to cruise into Sunday’s final of the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB’s) Regional Under-19 against Windward Islands. Yesterday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St Vincent, reigning champions, Guyana, dominated Barbados by 85 runs as the latter was dismissed for 98 in reply to Guyana’s 183.
For the winners three batsmen got starts of over 20 but failed to improvise. Opener Ronaldo Renee made 25, while Raymond Perez and Keemo Paul hit 37 and 33 respectively as the defending champions were bowled out for 183 in 49.5 overs. Four of the remaining batsmen also chipped in with scores of 15 or more, as a collective effort saw Guyana to a competitive total.

In reply Barbados was shaky at the start as they never got going and were stopped at 98 all out in 37.5 overs. Only three batsmen made it to double figures as opener Shian Braithwaite top scored with 35. Part-time spinner Malcolm Hubbard orchestrated the collapse, as he collected four wickets to finish as his team’s leading bowler. Looknauth Chinkoo supported with two wickets, while Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul and Kheshram Seyhodam had a wicket each. Left arm spinner Akenie Adams was also good with the ball although he finished wicket-less in the match. He had figures of seven overs three maidens, no wickets nine runs (7-3-9-0).
The win secured Guyana’s place in the finals as they completed their fifth win from six matches.
At Park Hill ground, leaders Windward Island defeated Trinidad and Tobago by three wickets with eight overs to spare. Batting first Trinidad made 258 in 48.3 overs, with Joshua Da Silva top scoring with 88. Akick Anthanaze got four wickets while Ryan John and Rasheed Fredericks took two wickets each.
Windwards were led by Emmanuel Stewart (92), who’s scintillating half century came with nine fours and two sixes off just 89 deliveries. He was assisted by Johann Jeremiah 61 and Anthanaze, who made 45.
Jonathan Bootan and Bryan Boodram captured three wickets each for Trinidad and Tobago.
Like Guyana, Windwards finished on five wins from six matches.
In the other match, Leewards’ bowlers did well to restrict Jamaica to 167-8 in 50 overs, but their batsmen failed for a second time as in many days, as they fell for 95 in 42 overs. Jamaica won the match by 72 runs.
