Guyana’s remaining five powerlifters will take to the platform on Saturday as the 2026 South American Powerlifting Championships in Santiago, Chile, enters its penultimate day of competition.
Twelve members of Guyana’s 17-member team have already competed at the championships, leaving Omali Vancooten, Joshua John, Sereste King, Tremel King, and Bjorn Williams to close out the country’s participation. Four of the five will be making their international debuts for the Golden Arrowhead.
Guyana has fielded its largest team at the championships in many years, with the 17-member contingent also including four female lifters.
Vancooten and John will both compete in the 93kg Open category, where they will come up against lifters from host nation Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Ecuador.
Sereste King will contest the 105kg Open division against competitors from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Suriname.
Among the Surinamese challengers is Anis Ade-Thomas, a Guyanese who previously represented Guyana before switching representation.
Meanwhile, international debutant Tremel King will join countryman Bjorn Williams in the 105kg Masters One category.
The two Guyanese are expected to be firmly in the medal hunt in what could develop into an intriguing contest between the teammates.
With the heavier divisions now taking centre stage, Saturday is expected to provide another exciting day of competition for Guyana’s athletes and supporters in Santiago.
