Health Ministry, McMaster University sign MoU for fellowship training in medicine
The Health Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with McMaster University to facilitate training of Guyanese physicians in various sub-specialities at the education institution.
On Monday, the Ministry said in a release that Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony made a recent trip to Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, to finalise the MoU with McMaster University.
Dr Anthony was accompanied by Dr Narendra Singh, Associate Professor of Paediatrics at McMaster University and President of Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK) organisation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) partnering with Guyana to address infant mortality.
This MoU essentially sets in motion a partnership in which McMaster has agreed to facilitate the training of Guyanese physicians in various sub-specialities. In return, McMaster will continue to expand its global health and research initiatives with a major focus in Guyana.
According to the Health Ministry the MoU was signed by Dr Frank Anthony; Faculty of Health Sciences Dean, Dr Paul O’Byrne and Board of Directors Chair of St Joseph Health Systems International Outreach Programme Karen Belaire.
Also attending the signing of the MoU was Chair of Paediatrics at McMaster Children Hospital, Dr Angelo Mikrogianakis and McMaster Children’s Hospital President and VP of Woman and Children’s Health, Bruce Squires.
In brief remarks, Dr Anthony thanked several physicians who have been instrumental in partnering with IHSC to develop many of the post-graduate programmes in Guyana. These include Dr Ronald Barr, Dr Brian Cameron, Dr Andrea Hunter, Dr April Tam, Dr Karen Baley and Dr Narendra Singh.
