Thirty-year-old Clifton Bhagwandat, a horse cart operator of Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was on Thursday stabbed to death by a 26-year-old labourer of the said area.
Based on reports received, at about 17:20h on the day in question, Bhagwandat went to the suspect, who is his neighbour, to purchase a pack of cigarettes but he was short of some money. This led to an argument between the men.
Police related that Bhagwandat reportedly snatched the money from the suspect’s hand, and said he was going to a Chinese shop to purchase his cigarette.
In anger, the suspect ran into his home, picked up a knife, rushed to the victim, and began stabbing him about his body. In an attempt to escape, he reportedly ran a short distance before collapsing. The suspect, however, made good his escape.
Upon hearing the commotion, residents went to inquire and found the man’s motionless body lying on the ground.
The Police were immediately summoned to the area. The EMT technicians were also summoned but after examining the injured man, they pronounced him dead.
On Friday, Commander of Region 4 C, Mahendra Siwnarine, when contacted, told this publication that the suspect has since turned himself in to the Police and has confessed to the murder. He is expected to be arraigned in the new week.
