…says work to start in 6 to 8 weeks
President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced plans to install additional sheds at the Hydronie/Parika Market following concerns raised by vendors about the need for greater protection from the elements. Ali said on Sunday that vendors and shoppers at the market expressed satisfaction with the improvements already made, including the installation of new sheds and drainage works. “It was heartening to hear the excitement and relief of the Hydronie Sunday Market vendors this morning as they shared how comfortable they feel in the new market space,” the President said in a social media post.
The vendors had previously operated along the roadway but have since moved into the market space, where they are now able to conduct their businesses in an environment protected from the sun and rain. Ali said he spent time at the market engaging with vendors and shoppers, listening to their experiences, concerns and suggestions. In a video subsequently posted to social media, the President said the decision was taken to extend the roofing to sections of the market that remain uncovered. “Today [Sunday], following my interactions with vendors and shoppers at the Hydronie Market, a decision was taken to install additional sheds to cover the remaining sections of the market, providing greater comfort and protection,” Ali said. He explained that vendors were satisfied with the new shed at the back of the market, as well as the shed in the middle and the improved drainage. According to the President, vendors operating in another section requested similar facilities. “The money is going to be transferred to the region, and they’re going to go out for advertisement,” Ali said. He said the works are expected to commence within six to eight weeks, once the necessary processes are completed. “So you’ll have the shed on both sides of the market,” the President said.
