The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are two years away and the attention will be turning to who from Guyana will be earning a spot to compete at the prestigious Games and possibly win another medal for the country.
Since the Moscow 1980 Games when bantamweight boxer Micheal Paris won bronze, the Golden Arrow Head has not seen a podium finish. However, President of Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) believes the wait is possibly over, since he
believes Keevin Allicock can deliver the goods.
“If I do think he can win an Olympic medal yes I do think he can and not him alone but we need to have the resources “, Ninvalle told Guyana Times Sport of his expectations ahead of the Games.
Allicock’s dream run at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas came to an end after he was out-boxed by England’s James David in their flyweight (52Kg) final.
More close to home he has been menacing, dominating all opponents in the Caribbean and in Guyana.
“I think he is one of the better boxers within Latin America and I say this because it is not about his boxing skills alone , it is about his temperament, his focus and discipline”, the GBA head contended.
Allicock comes from a long line of boxers from the Albouystown community and has been touted to be on the same glory path as did the late Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, lifted Guyana high on the pedestal with a world title win over James Page.
Cognisant of this glaring fact, Ninvalle plans on offering much support possible to the 18 year-old plugist.
“In the past two decades, I don’t think I have seen a boxer with the type of skill and acumen, Mr Allicock has and now it left up to him to keep the hunger. We will do our part to make sure we give him all the necessary to take to the him Tokyo”.
Last month he won one of the three gold medals the country secured at the Caribbean Boxing Championship held in St Lucia.
His glowing reputation has seen the GBA explore the possibility of having himself and Collin Lewis engaged in foreign training camps ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games which are slated to be held in Australia from April 4-15.
While not written in stone, the city of Sydney in Australia seems a possibility for the duo’s stint but they are still seeking to solidify the option with the help of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA). (Akeem Greene)
