Illegal fuel boat explodes at Moruca

A boat transporting fuel from the Venezuelan border into Guyana’s waters went up in flames on Saturday, causing police to launch an investigation into the illegal fuel trade.

Based on reports received, the boat exploded at about 16:00h in the vicinity of Gteen Island at Moruca, North West District. No one was reportedly injured in the explosion, but on all accounts, safety procedures had not been followed.
The captain of the boat, Lindo (only name given), explained that the boat was moored and he was some distance away when he heard a loud explosion. As he looked around, he said, he saw the entire boat in flames.
He told police that the boat was already loaded and was due to travel to other locations. He, however, did not reveal the name of the owner of the boat.
Police are continuing their investigations.
